Fri, 6 Dec 2013A total of 20,000 applications for jobs at a new IKEA store in unemployment-hit Spain crashed the furniture and home wear retailer’s server earlier this week, reports news agency Agence France-Presse.

Opening next summer, the store is to offer 400 jobs in Alfafar on the outskirts of Valencia, the country’s third largest city. Applications opened on Monday.

After crashing on Wednesday, the website is now back up and running.

According to the news agency, when another IKEA store opened in Jerez in the south of the country in 2009, there were 50,000 applicants – but their applications were more evenly spread over a month.

Although news about the jobs opening up for application was posted at the end of October on PortalParado.es, a web resource for jobseekers in Spain, it today remains the website’s second most read story. The website also notes that 500 construction-phase jobs have been created at the site.
