International hotel chain Travelodge has launched a new work experience programme to help tackle youth and long-term unemployment in London.

Travelodge has committed to hire around 50 work experience candidates this year. Candidates, who must be aged 18-24, will be paid the national minimum wage and gain experience of the hotel industry, including housekeeping, customer service and hospitality.
 
They must have been out of work for more than nine months to apply for the scheme through Job Centre Plus, a company statement said.
 
The programme was initially trialled over a six-month period late last year and led to the permanent appointment of 11 new staff members in Central London hotels.
