Australian remote jobs boost through $1.5bn programme

July sees the launch of the Australian government’s new A$1.5bn (£960m) Remote Jobs and Communities Program (RJCP).
Thu, 23 May 2013July sees the launch of the Australian government’s new A$1.5bn (£960m) Remote Jobs and Communities Program (RJCP).

RJCP will operate in 59 remote regions across Australia, which has one of the lowest population densities of any country globally. It will help get people into long-term employment and work in communities to ensure labour needs are met.

The government says feedback from such remote communities revealed that previous schemes found existing services provided short-term help, but fell down on long-term results.

The money provided for the project is made up of:
•    $1.1bn for remote employment and participation activities, to provide locals upskilling opportunities
•    $237.5m for a Community Development Fund, which will fund community activities
•    $89m for a Remote Youth Leadership and Development Corps, which will have 12,000 places on the programme for young people across five years.

RJCP providers have been announced across Australia's six states, with further providers due to be named this week.

Minister for community services, indigenous employment and economic development, and for the status of women, Julie Collins, says: “The programme is based on community and involvement. It will encourage and promote collaborative, community-driven approaches to employment and participation activities.”
