Web Exclusive: Five minutes with... Roddy Watt

Being a Scot, and as an accordionist, my taste in music is somewhat unusual!

Name: Roddy Watt
Position: CEO
Company: Berkeley Scott group Plc
Age: A young 50!

What do you like most about your job?
Challenge! As a company we have had more than our fair share in the last five years, but to deal with everything that is thrown at you and still come out on top is a pretty satisfying place to be.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?
"Think before you speak - and then don't!" - given to me by an aunt many years ago. I should have paid more attention to it!
Also to coin the Scottish bard, Robert Burns "see yourself as others see you". Self awareness is something we tend to be pretty poor at, and being aware of your impact on others is a real positive in life.

Ideal four dinner guests (dead or alive)?
Bill Clinton - must have some excellent stories to tell! Martin Johnson, England’s victorious Rugby World Cup captain, he is a hero. Winston Churchill as probably the greatest Britain of recent times. And Nelson Mandela - universally acclaimed as one of the greatest men of recent times.

What do you wish you’d known before you became a recruiter?
That people rarely do what they say they are going to - particularly clients!

What’s best - the carrot or the stick?
Carrot, always, but stick is also required sparingly from time to time. People need to want to do it. Fear is not a healthy motivator.

Is there a song/album/piece of music you always go back to?
Being a Scot, and as an accordionist, my taste in music is somewhat unusual! Pretty much any lyrical, Celtic folk music is good by me.

What one thing would you change about yourself?
My age. I would like to be 21 again!

What’s in your pockets right now?
A couple of holes! And a spotted handkerchief with which I am trying to block one!
