IT degrees not up to scratch

e-Skills study reveals need for innovative IT courses

IT degrees are not meeting the needs of employers, according to the latest e-skills UK ICT Inquiry.

It reveals that around 59% of employers do not consider an ICT-related degree to be important for graduate entrants to IT and telecoms professional roles.

Karen Price, chief executive of e-skills UK says:  “IT-related degrees must evolve to reflect the broader range of capabilities required to be successful in modern careers in IT and Telecoms.

“The success of the Information Technology Management for Business (ITMB) degrees, created with employers to develop the business-oriented, customer-focused IT professionals the industry needs, highlights how urgently such innovative courses are needed. ”

More than half of employers consider the level of achievement in the degree to be ‘important’ or ‘very important’. Less than 5% of employers consider the place of study to be important or very important.
