The first of a planned 20 specialist job centres specifically for young jobseekers in Gauteng province opened yesterday (24 July), reports the South African governmental news agency.

The first Lulaway Job Centre, located in Johannesburg, plans to register and train 8,000 young jobseekers by the end of the 2012/13 financial year and place 5,000 of these in private sector jobs. With 8.8m people, Gauteng has an unemployment rate consistently around the 25% mark.Gauteng department of social development spokesperson Sello Mokoena says that the job centres and the government were trying to ensure that entry-level positions were only available to the unemployed youth.

Centres will be housed in existing community and development centres, and over 107 private firms have lent their support to the project.
