Getting a great price on copier paper? That’s good purchasing. Asking a company better known for designing tennis rackets to draw up the inside of a new Ford? That’s strategic sourcing, say Bill Markham, Bob Tevelson and Tim Houghton

Is strategic sourcing just a catchy marketing term, like calling prunes “dried plums”? It would be easy to draw that conclusion - many “strategic” sourcing efforts are about negotiating lower prices for office supplies, corrugated packaging and temporary services, or are about using new tools, like auctions, catalogues or exchanges. So where’s the strategy?
