Is it better to recruit recruiters who have experience within a particular industry or is it equally valuable for them to be a good recruiter but with no previous sector knowledge?

Ann Taylor, Head of resourcing UK, BAE Systems
“In today’s competition for the best talent, the most important quality I look for in a recruiter is their ability to understand and qualify complex requirements. Increasingly, skills are transferable across industries and a strong recruiter can identify innovative and proactive resourcing solutions, regardless of industry background. A large and varied corporate environment like ours requires a mixture of industry skill-set insight. Alexander Mann Solutions, our recruitment partner, has implemented a strong and diverse team to support this.”

Naveen Tuli, Managing director, Laurence Simons
“In the current market, experience is king. Law firms and multinationals demand specialist legal recruiters have their finger on the pulse of new legislations and industry trends. Over the past two years, clients have spent more time hiring the right person and this can only be assured if the recruiter who is representing them has a thorough understanding of the issues they face. Many of our consultants are qualified lawyers which reassures clients we appreciate the issues surrounding the industry and the recruitment process. And if you can speak with authority you have the jump on those who don’t.”

James Lock, Chief executive, Communicate Recruitment Solutions
“Having recruited consultants for Communicate Recruitment Solutions over the past five years, I have seen all types applying for a position here. My conclusion is that it is easier to teach a quality recruiter an industry than it is to train a poor recruiter with sector specific experience to be highly skilled. Obviously industry and sector knowledge is always an advantage but I now actively seek consultants from different sector backgrounds (always professional services, however!) as I believe there are great people that are being overlooked by our competitors.”
