If you could speak to the government about the upcoming staff hire concession legislation, what would you tell them?

Neil Daly
Managing director, Hamilton Consultants
“I’d urge the government to look at the particular impact this is likely to have on the not-for-profit sector including the real possibility of endangering service provision. Many of these organisations offer services that are classed as non business and therefore outside the scope of VAT — which means the VAT they have to pay their suppliers is irrecoverable. Nursing and care homes are a good example where the withdrawal will make essential temporary staffing even more expensive The result? Lower service levels and a lower standard of care. That can’t be right.”
Gavin McMurray
Managing director, ShiftShack.com
“I would tell the government it makes no difference to us because ShiftShack.com is different to a lot of recruitment companies. We don’t make a margin on people’s time — we are very low cost and only charge a small fee for matching hourly-paid employees with employers. ShiftShack.com is effectively a dating service for employees and employers. If the new legislation simplifies VAT transactions and puts the recruitment industry on a level footing with other UK businesses, I can’t see any issues with it.”
Adrien Bray
Managing director, Innov8 Recruitment
“Many people have said that the government of the day does not like recruitment businesses and this new legislation is just further evidence of that. I believe it goes further back, and probably stems from the Labour Party’s own formation, and has been greatly influenced by the unions. When will a member of this government realise we’re in a recession and they need to listen to business — and more importantly the electorate? They have said that they are helping businesses, but this is just further evidence that theyaren’t. If the government has any clear understanding on what a recession does to the recruitment industry, they should stop this legislation coming into force.”
