How are you motivating your staff to combat the post-Christmas blues?

Martin Edmondson
Chief executive, Graduates Yorkshire
“Clearly the national economic mood is gloomy, but as a team we are turning the situation on its head and viewing this as a time to search for opportunity. To that end we held a team session recently on new product development and diversification, with each member of the team assigned a new business initiative to develop. This increased level of ownership of new business initiatives is a great way to encourage buy-in, nurture talent and contribute to business growth. It is well proven that people who feel they have a stake in a business are more motivated to succeed.”

Helen Lacey
Director, Red Berry Recruitment
“We are always upbeat, but having fun and making the office a pleasant work environment makes life and work so much more enjoyable. For 2009, we will be looking at new business sectors, while also concentrating on our current clients. Normally the consultants go by themselves but this time I will be going too, to see if we can learn from one another. I have also paid for my consultants to have gym membership — healthy body means healthy mind. Plus, fortnightly we will be having a sales competition — who can get the most visits, obtain a booking or a vacancy, in which points mean prizes!”

Jason Guy
Managing director, People Plus
Recruitment
“As a rule, the post-Christmas period is filled with resolutions, so to ensure that we keep with tradition I will make sure that all of our staff are keeping to their resolutions… the ones that I have set for them, of course! These are, quite simply, replacing the commonly used phrases of 2008 — ‘credit’, ‘crunch’ and ‘recession’ — with ‘sales’, ‘growth’ and ‘success’. I am sure this will go someway to ensuring a happy new year and a profitable and prosperous 2009.”
