Public sector faces high percentage of employment appeals

More than a third (37%) of employment appeals are made against public sector employers despite the sector accounting for just 22% of the UK workforce, according to research from commercial law firm EMW Picton Howell.
 
The private sector, which employs three-quarters of the UK workforce (75%), is involved in just 56% of employment cases.
 
Jon Taylor, head of employment at EMW Picton Howell, says: “Many employment cases arising from the raft of redundancies in the recession have yet to reach the appeal stage at the EAT. When we look at these stats again this time next year the proportion of employment appeals against private sector companies may have risen substantially. We’ve already seen a fourfold increase in our own employment litigation work.”
