LMA’s Singapore director Clem Cull loses battle with cancer

Clem Cull, a director at banking, compliance, HR and secretarial staffing specialist LMA Recruitment’s Singapore operation, has died at the age of 43 following a battle with cancer.

Cull, who was born in Dunedin, New Zealand, started out in New Zealand police force’s fraud squad before moving to London in January 2003 to work as a corporate fraud investigator for the London Borough of Barnet and subsequently the Standards Board for England.

But it was in February 2005 that Cull moved into the world of recruitment, placing investigators, before sourcing and placing compliance professionals in financial services. His work included setting up the compliance desk for a London-based recruiter.

Cull then moved to Singapore with his wife Amy, continuing in compliance recruitment.

Shortly after the birth of their first child, Annabel, Cull was diagnosed with cancer, taking a year off to seek treatment, which was successful. In August 2013, he joined LMA Singapore as a director on its newly established compliance desk.

But in March 2016, a month before the birth of his second child, Daniel, the cancer returned. In February this year, Cull was welcomed back into LMA’s office on a part-time basis but the cancer returned for a third time and was more ‘aggressive’ and this time he was unable to beat it.

In a statement sent to Recruiter, LMA described Cull as a “fighter who refused to give in”. “Throughout his treatment regime, all he spoke of was getting better and returning to work. LMA made arrangements for him to work from home whenever he felt up to it,” the statement adds.

Russell Thompson, LMA’s group managing director, described Cull as “the best guy any boss could hope to have” who “helped grow the (Singapore) business”.

Also paying tribute to Cull, Matthew Streeton, who heads LMA Singapore and was a cricket teammate of Cull’s, said: “Clem was an inspiration to us all. He worked to the end, making his final placement three weeks before his death. He will be sorely missed.”

A memorial service will be held in Dunedin on Friday 14 July. Details have been published in the New Zealand press. The family has requested no flowers but donations to a cancer charity of the donor’s choice.
