Recruiters have no plans to open Brussels offices

Recruitment agencies working with Lloyd’s of London have no plans to expand their operations to Brussels in the near future.

Lloyd’s, the world’s largest insurance market, announced plans yesterday to open a new office in Brussels by the end of next year, in preparations for the UK’s exit of the European Union.

Opening an office in mainland Europe will allow Lloyd’s to work with businesses in the EU if the UK is unable to secure guarantees over passporting rights for financial services businesses during Brexit negotiations.

Responding to the move, Guy Day, CEO of Eames Consulting Group, a recruitment agency that works with Lloyd’s, recognised the importance of being able to continue to serve the organisation in this additional location.

However, he confirmed Eames would be able to continue to provide resource from its existing European offices and said it would not be necessary to open another branch at present.

Day told Recruiter: “It’s important that as a partner to Lloyd’s we are able to provide quality resource to the business regardless of location. There are no immediate plans to expand physical operations into Brussels.

“With proven experience placing permanent and interim resource into Europe from our London and Zurich offices, we are confident we can continue to work closely with Lloyd’s moving forward,” he confirmed.

This was a sentiment echoed by Robin Stafford, director at insurance recruitment agency MW Appointments, who noted that Lloyd’s has been expanding globally for some time.

“We’re not likely to be opening an office in Brussels because the strategies we are using at the moment are working well," he told Recruiter. "It’s an exciting new dawn, and on the whole, we’re very positive about the future.”

Lloyd’s announcement follows the historic triggering of Article 50 by Prime Minister Theresa May on Wednesday, which marks the beginning of the official negotiation process between the UK and the remaining 27 EU nations.

In a statement released yesterday, Lloyd’s CEO Inga Beale said it was key for the organisation to be able to continue to provide its services seamlessly after Brexit.

She said: “It is important that we are able to provide the market and customers with an effective solution that means business can carry on without interruption when the UK leaves the EU.

Brussels was chosen as the location of the new premises because it “met the critical elements of providing a robust regulatory framework in a central European location, and will enable Lloyd’s to continue to provide specialist underwriting expertise to our customers”.
