Just over half of employers expect a shortage of candidates to fill permanent jobs, according to the latest JobsOutlook survey from the Recruitment & Employment Confederation (REC).

The findings reveal employers with more than 250 staff are particularly concerned about a lack of available talent, with 63% anticipating a shortage. Employers anticipate the shortage of candidates to be particularly acute within engineering and tech, health and social care, and construction.

The survey finds one in five hirers (22%) plan to recruit more permanent staff in the medium term (four to 12 months), with just 1% planning to cut headcount. Demand for permanent staff is higher in London, where 28% of employers expect to increase their permanent headcount over the medium term.

The latest JobsOutlook also reveals:

  • Six in 10 (59%) have increased their headcount over the last year.
  • A third (34%) believe that UK economic conditions are improving, while 29% think they are worsening.
  • Almost eight in 10 (78%) are operating with ‘none’ or ‘a little’ spare capacity, and would have to take on staff to meet any increase in demand.
