National Trust seeks ‘hardy’ ranger applicants for Farne Islands Thu, 2 Feb 2017 News Y BM http://www.recruiter.co.uk/news/2017/02/national-trust-seeks-hardy-ranger-applicants-for-farne-islands/

The National Trust is seeking “hardy” applicants for a role of ranger on the remote Farne Islands, off the Northumberland coast.

The successful candidate will live in the company of thousands of puffins, have no running water (it has to be brought in by boat) and no access to a washing machine.

The National Trust told Recruiter the response to the job advert has been ‘positive”.

It has advertised the role through the National Trust website, social media platforms, the Countryside Jobs Service and Environment Jobs.

As one of two full-time rangers, the successful candidate will live on the islands for nine months of the year.

Rangers on the islands must brave dive-bombing attacks from Arctic terns and harsh spring storms that can see them marooned on the islands for weeks at a time.

Countryside manager Gwen Potter said: “As a ranger you’ll be in charge of monitoring the wildlife and seals on the islands – as well as assisting with scientific research.

“This job isn’t the normal 9 to 5. Being good with PowerPoint isn’t a priority. It’s not a job for the faint-hearted.”
