A seven-year-old boy has written to a Scottish Premiership football club putting himself forward for the job of team manager.

The BBC reports Inverness Caledonian Thistle received the handwritten application to chairman Kenny Cameron from young Ewen MacKenzie following the departure of John Hughes, who had been negotiating a release from his contract following a rift with the board over his budget.

In the letter, Ewen says he can speak to his headmaster to “see if he would be up for me leaving school early for important matches”, adding: “I'm sure it won't be a problem as long as the players chip in and help me with my homework.”

The Scottish Premiership club has published the letter on its club website, adding: "We think Ewen could be a top contender for the vacant ICTFC managerial position... what do you think?"

However, STV reports chairman Kenny Cameron broke the news to the ambitious schoolboy that he had not made the cut yesterday afternoon.

Ewen was thanked for his application in a letter and told his time will come if he continues his "excellent progress at school".
