The US, India and Switzerland were the three most likely destinations for job transfers from the UK in 2015, according to research from global relocation services provider Cartus.

But these destinations pose “unique and often formidable” challenges, particularly with regards to housing, according to Cartus' ‘Trends in Global Relocation: Biggest Challenges’ survey, published earlier this week.

Even moving to the most likely destination for job transfers – the US – brings challenges for UK expats. These include rising housing costs due to the rental market for expats becoming tighter, rising living costs and some landlords requesting more payments up-front. Lack of available housing in more rural locations in the States is also an issue, as is ongoing exchange rate fluctuations affecting some expat housing budgets.

In India, the country that received the second-highest number of transferees from the UK last year, the issue is high demand for suitable housing, as well as limited availability of homes in many of the country's gated communities.

The report also points to further complications arising in India in finding homes in online listings. These listings can often be unreliable and outdated, with landlords often continuing to show a property until the lease has been signed, setting unrealistic expectations about available homes.

Meanwhile in Switzerland, third in the rankings, the report says rental rates have not changed significantly, but demand has increased. Conversely in Zurich, Switzerland’s largest city, the situation is more stable because demand and rental rates have decreased slightly over the past year.
