900,000 UK retail jobs to go over next decade

Mon, 29 Feb 2016

Around a third of UK retail jobs will disappear by 2025, according to a report from retail trade association the British Retail Consortium (BRC).

The report, published this morning, predicts 900k retail jobs will go by the middle of the next decade. This is as a result of the retail sector becoming more digital, property leases coming up for renewal and the cost of labour going up, while the cost of technology goes down.

The UK’s retail sector currently employs around 3m people, according to BRC figures.

The BRC’s report was based on detailed research and modelling across the industry, involving senior retail executives.
