More than 70 illegal recruitment agencies are operating in Ghana, Nana Baah Abu Okae, chairman of the Ghana Association of Private Agencies, has disclosed.

Speaking to The Ghanaian Times, he said most of the agencies charge jobseekers without finding them a job.

In a bid to stop the illegal recruiters, his association is about to publish a code of ethics for its members, which is hoped to weed out the unlawful operators.

He said that as of the end of October, there were only 19 recruitment agencies registered and licensed to operate in Ghana by the Department of Labour.

An anonymous Department of Labour official reportedly told the publication the department was stepping up its monitoring to help curb illegal recruitment activity.
