A Scottish government initiative is helping ease the redundancy blow for workers laid off by a Fife-based papermaking firm this week by introducing them to employers interested in taking on staff.

Tullis Russell Papermakers went into administration earlier this week, making 325 people redundant with a further 149 jobs at risk, local media reports.

A Scottish government statement said its redundancy response initiative, Partnership Action for Continuing Employment (PACE), will next week (6 May) hold an event specifically for Tullis Russell staff to connect them with support agencies, training providers, and employers who are interested in recruiting.

Business minister Fergus Ewing said in the statement: “The Scottish government is acting fast to do what we can to support the Tullis Russell workforce through this very anxious time.”

The government also announced an initial investment of £6m in Fife Taskforce, which was set up following the closure of Tullis Russell and will provide support for skills development, training and support for local businesses.

In other redundancy-related news, across the Atlantic the US Department of Labor has announced a $150m (£97.7m) pool of funding for training and re-employment initiatives for laid-off workers.

The money is being made available through the new Sector Partnerships National Emergency Grant programme.
