Labour would extend GLA remit in its election manifesto

Labour has stopped short of promising “basic standard” licences for recruitment agencies in favour of extending the remit of the Gangmasters Licensing Authority (GLA) in its 2015 election manifesto.

Labour has stopped short of promising “basic standard” licences for recruitment agencies in favour of extending the remit of the Gangmasters Licensing Authority (GLA) in its 2015 election manifesto.
Last November, Labour leader Ed Miliband vowed he would begin consultations or measures to force rogue recruitment agencies to “clean up their act” to stop the exploitation of agency workers. One of the options put forward was a licensing system that would require agencies to comply with “basic standards”.
But there was no mention of the licensing system in the Party's manifesto, published this morning (13 April), with Labour saying it would crack down on rogue agencies by extending the remit of the GLA where there is evidence of abuse of workers.
Speaking at last month’s GLA conference in Derby, current minister for modern slavery and organised crime Karen Bradley MP told delegates any extension of the GLA’s remit had to be done in a controlled way.
A GLA spokesperson told Recruiter the organisation is unable to provide comment on Labour’s proposals at the moment.
Labour’s manifesto also announced plans to ban recruitment agencies from hiring only from overseas. Last November the Department for Business Innovation & Skills (BIS) announced proposals that would give UK jobseekers a level playing field for job ads placed in the EEA (European Economic Area).
