Following the news Spanish convents were turning to social media to recruit nuns comes a recruitment ad for a Buddhist temple in Southern China that went viral on the country’s messaging app Wechat.

News service Asia One reports the recruitment ad for a Shaolin temple in the Guangdong province went viral on the messaging app and received 4,000 applications from all over the world within five days.

The advert reportedly comprises cartoons, catchy phrases and background music.

There were only eight positions available, including user interface designer, copywriter, IT support and new media operator.

Asia One reported a spokesperson for the 1,000-year-old Huadong Temple saying they were “scrambling to deal with all our mail”.

Master Huike, who is in charge of the culture department at the temple, was reported as saying the ad was “designed and produced by several enthusiastic post-80s and 90s youngsters”.

The temple has its own website, blog and microblog containing cartoons and articles on Buddhism.
