Kenyan police recruiters have been instructed to reject all candidates with missing or discoloured teeth, squint eyes, narrow chests and flat feet, news service The Star reports.

The news site reports National Police Service recruitment officers, during this week’s recruitment day, have been directed to reject all candidates with the aforementioned features, as they are “unfit for service”.

The Star was unable to get an answer from inspector general of police Joseph Boinett as to why people with those traits would be denied entry into police service but an unnamed senior officer said candidates with teeth issues were thought to have weak bones, while those with flat feet were thought to be at increased risk of heart attack.

A subsequent story said 4,000 recruits reported to the Kenya Police Training College following the recruitment day on Monday.

The force came under fire last year for recruiting 10,000 people in what was later found to be a deeply flawed and corrupt process, with some paying significant amounts of money to fake recruiters.
