Apprenticeship starts down by 70,000

The number of apprenticeships started in the UK has fallen by almost 70,000 in the last year, according to data from the government’s skills funding agency.

The data reveals a total of 440,400 apprenticeship programme starts recorded in the full year 2013/14, down from 510,200 for 2012/13.

The construction sector and science and mathematics were the only sectors to witness an increase in apprenticeship starts, with 15,890 for 2013/14, up from 13,730 in 2012/13 for construction, and 360 for science and maths in 2013/14, up from 320 in the previous year.

Business, administration and law, and health, public services and care saw the most apprenticeship starts with 125,900 starts and 108,560 respectively. However, these figures were markedly down on 160,410 for business admin and 123,370 in health for the full year 2012/13.
