Thu, 11 Dec 2014A government-funded careers and enterprise company has been created to work with schools and ensure young people are aware of all the options available to them when they leave education.
The company, chaired by Christine Hodgson – current chair of consultancy firm Capgemini UK – will be led by employers and run independently from the government.
The aim is to help broker more effective relationships between employers and schools and colleges. This will enable employers to talk directly to pupils about the opportunities available and ensure they are able to consider all the options as they move through school.
In a press statement from the Department of Education (DoE), education secretary Nicky Morgan said the company would run a £5m investment fund to “support and generate innovation” in careers advice.
Chris Jones, chief executive of the City & Guilds Group, said in a statement: “Careers advice in schools is simply not good enough. Young people and their parents are clear that they are not being given the right guidance. So today’s announcement from the education secretary on a new careers company to strengthen links between schools and businesses is a really positive step forward.”
He added that the next stage would be to understand how it worked in practice. He believed that to make it a reality, “we need closer links between careers advice services in schools and Local Enterprise Partnerships (LEPs) who can give an accurate picture of the labour market. We hope to see this happen through this initiative”.
