A US Marine recruiter has been charged with first-degree sexual misconduct with a minor nearly two years after an alleged sexual contact with a then 17-year-old prospective recruit, The Seattle Times reports.

Louis Henry Abalos of Renton, near Seattle, Washington state, was charged last month and entered a not-guilty plea in court this week [2 September].

He was released on personal recognisance and ordered not to contact the alleged victim, now aged 19.

According to the paper, the court records showed the girl told investigators she felt pressured to participate because she was afraid if she did not, she would not get into the Marines.

The alleged misconduct occurred between 1 September and 30 November 2012 in the recruiter’s office and vehicle.

The paper said it was not clear if Abalos was still a Marine recruiter, as calls to a US Marine Corps spokesman were not returned.
