Thu, 24 Jul 2014Video interviewing has improved the consistency of the recruitment process for more junior candidates over the past year at global media and entertainment company NBCUniversal, according to a member of its recruitment team.

Implementing video interviewing has allowed the recruitment team to engage with a larger pool of candidates, while maintaining an efficient process.

Speaking to Recruiter, talent acquisition manager Maria Onyango says the system offers a “fair and consistent process”, especially as the company deals with such a high number of applicants.

She says that so far the technique has been successful, but it has to be “managed in the right way”.

Instead of scheduling and conducting phone interviews with each qualified candidate, recruiters begin the process by inviting candidates to answer interview questions online.

Candidates can go through an interactive process and answer questions through webcam or a smartphone app. The responses are recorded and sent back to the assigned recruiter, who assesses which candidates to move to the next step.

Onyango tells Recruiter they have to “carefully explain” to a candidate how the process works. “What we learnt was to make it very clear to the candidate how long they have to answer each question, and it was important for us not to modify that time from question to question.”

“We also made sure we gave a candidate advice on background noise, the type of posters they have on show, and the angle they have the camera positioned at,” she adds.
