Getting apprenticeship now twice as hard as getting university place

It is now twice as hard to get on an apprenticeship scheme than it is to get a place at university, as new figures released by the House of Commons show apprenticeship starts for under-25s have fallen by 11,324.
Mon, 7 Jul 2014 It is now twice as hard to get on an apprenticeship scheme than it is to get a place at university, as new figures released by the House of Commons show apprenticeship starts for under-25s have fallen by 11,324.

Speaking at City of Westminster College, the shadow minister for universities Liam Byrne said high-quality apprenticeships are harder than ever to win as he set out Labour’s plan to boost apprenticeships through “a new, bigger vocational route to degree level professional and technical skills”.

Young people have a greater chance of getting a first-class degree than getting a place on the Jaguar Land Rover apprenticeship scheme, said the Birmingham MP.

Byrne said Labour has already set out plans to boost apprenticeships. Those plans include delivering a ‘something-for-something’ deal with large employers, with commitments to boost high-quality opportunities rewarded with greater influence of skills funding. Also underway are plans to use procurement to boost quality apprenticeship opportunities for young people by requiring large firms winning major government contracts to offer apprenticeships.
