Uber, the mobile phone taxi service app that literally stopped traffic in London and other international capitals yesterday, claims it is creating 20,000 jobs for drivers each month while “powering billions in economic impact in cities around the world”.

Uber, the mobile phone taxi service app that literally stopped traffic in London and other international capitals yesterday, claims it is creating 20,000 jobs for drivers each month while “powering billions in economic impact in cities around the world”.
The claims came as the company announced that it had raised $1.2bn (£713m) at a $17bn valuation before receiving an injection of financing.
Uber, which operates in 37 countries, did not specify whether the 20,000 jobs included part-time roles.
Chief executive Travis Kalanick said that “hundreds of thousands of entrepreneurs” were using the platform to build their own small businesses, resulting in a “huge job growth engine for cities”.
On Wednesday, taxi drivers in Berlin, Madrid and Paris joined their London colleagues to protest against the rival taxi service over what they regard as a lack of regulation of Uber. Brussels’ Commercial Court ruled in April that Uber was not properly licensed to operate in the Belgian capital and decreed that Uber drivers should be fined €10k (£8k) each time they attempted to pick someone up.
