Recruitment start-ups join wider entrepreneurial surge

Tue, 28 Jan 2014 | By Sam SachdevaRecruiters are among a growing number of entrepreneurs gaining confidence to set up their own businesses, according to an industry figure.

According to newly released research from national enterprise campaign StartUp Britain, 526,446 new businesses were registered with Companies House in 2013 – a record number of new enterprises for a year and higher than the 484,224 businesses registered in 2012.

Rhys Jones, managing director of recruitment start-up support company Davidson Gray, tells recruiter.co.uk he has noticed a change in attitudes towards recruitment start-ups since he started his business 18 months ago.
“There’s a lot more optimism, or a lack of pessimism, in the recruiters I speak to – people are actually prepared to take the risk now, whereas before it was better the devil you know.”

Jones says he has started to receive more unsolicited calls in the last six months from people interested in setting up a start-up, with recruiters “more prepared to back themselves” and less concerned about market conditions.

“Before, people were making silly money, then the recession hit and only the best were left, but now people are accustomed to the market being tighter and they see that as normal.”

Jones says he is receiving interest from all over the UK, and expects demand to continue to grow throughout 2014.
