Mon, 4 Nov 2013Glasgow-headquartered international engineering firm Weir Group is to increase its Malaysia-based workforce from 400 to over 1,000 as part of an investment of more than £70m in the country over the next three years.

The company is to build an additional foundry, a machine shop and a second rubber processing plant at Sendayan Techvalley, 70km South-East of the Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur.

In 2010, Weir acquired local rubber maker Linatex, and has since more than doubled production.

Weir chief executive officer Keith Cochrane says: “Throughout our time in Malaysia, Weir has been impressed by the quality of trained staff, technical support and the reliability of source materials. This expansion demonstrates our confidence in Malaysia as a long-term source of high quality products for our customers around the world.”

Cochrane also thanked the Malaysian government and UK government department UK Trade & Investment for “their assistance and support in facilitating this investment”.

Weir has interests in over 70 countries worldwide, and employs a total of around 14,000 people. Around a third of revenues come from emerging markets in Asia-Pacific, Africa and South America.
