IT, engineering & manufacturing lead online freelance demand, finds Elance

Making up 35% of all work posted on Elance, IT & programming remains the biggest sector, with design & multimedia (25%) and writing & translation (23%) continuing to be the other major areas – despite the embryonic rise as reported by recruiter.co.uk in May of more white collar work coming through the site.

Engineering & manufacturing, sales & marketing and administrative support job categories saw the greatest growth in demand in Q2, at 173%, 87% and 85%.

The number of businesses hiring freelancers online through Elance increased by 51%, and total payments rose by 47% year-on-year in the month of June.
