Thu, 18 Jul 2013Six people are due in Southern Derbyshire Magistrates’ Court today charged with human trafficking offences following a multi-agency operation involving the Gangmasters Licensing Authority (GLA), which saw seven arrests made on Monday.

The six individuals were charged last night with the offences of human trafficking into the UK and human trafficking within the UK, while the seventh individual arrested, who has not been charged, was released on bail while enquiries continue.

As reported on Monday, police also identified 11 potential victims believed to have been trafficked into the UK from Eastern Europe. They were working in roles including flower packing and meat processing, both being types of labour regulated by the GLA.

Police also believe that some of the 11 men’s details have been used to claim benefits fraudulently.

Detectives from Derbyshire Police and officers from the Serious Organised Crime Agency’s UK Human Trafficking Centre continue to work with the Department for Work and Pensions and the GLA as the investigation continues.

On Monday, GLA chief executive officer Paul Broadbent (pictured) described forced labour as “a deeply concerning and increasing crime trend”.
