Wed, 3 Jul 2013A recruiter has been arrested and received a police caution from Greater Manchester Police having gained unauthorised access to the computer network and server of his former employer, recruitment firm Stark Brooks.

On Thursday 27 June, Gary Chaplin admitting unauthorised access to computer material, in breach of the Computer Misuse Act 1990 and its amendments under the Police and Justice Act 2006.

And the company says in a statement that it is now “taking advice in relation to potential civil action against the perpetrator”.

Stark Brooks also says its directors had become aware of the access in February, adding that it has now “conducted a full review of our network security and are completely satisfied the security vulnerability has been eliminated”.

According to the website of the Daily Mail, Chaplin lost his job with Stark Brooks at the end of December 2011 having “mistakenly sent an expletive-filled rejection email to 4,000 people”. Chaplin said he was “mortified by what I did”, saying he would regret “forever” what he described as  “moment of idiocy”.

The next month (January 2012), he arrived at multi-sector and executive search Communicate Recruitment Solutions where he launched its new Manchester-based North of England operation, Communicate North.

He has since left the firm, although Communicate would not confirm to Recruiter when the company parted ways with Chaplin, and declined to comment further saying that “this story is nothing to do with Communicate”. Communicate no longer has a Northern office.

This morning Recruiter was not able to reach Chaplin, who has now set up an executive search firm known as Gary Chaplin. The one firm registered with Companies House under the name Gary Chaplin Ltd was incorporated in October 2012 and is registered in Wilmslow, Cheshire.
