Tue, 18 Jun 2013Former cabinet minister Hazel Blears MP has continued her campaign against unpaid internships with a debate in a secondary chamber of the House of Commons this morning.

MPs dealt debated the matter from 9.30am to 11am today in Westminster Hall as part of parliamentary business which is not linked to a bill previously tabled by Blears in December 2012, which sought to “prohibit the advertising of long-term unpaid internships” and further regulate conditions of employment for paid internships.

She will later today launch ‘Let’s Get Our House in Order’, a campaign to urge MPs themselves to pay their own interns. She also explains her reasons for opposing unpaid placements and talks about a parliamentary internship scheme she supports in this BBC News video.

In April, job site Monster.co.uk pledged that it would not allow the advertisement of unpaid internships on its site, a move welcomed by Blears.
