Substantial job creation is expected in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland after two multinationals, pharmaceutical firm Almac and IT company EMC, announced plans to expand their activities.

Almac
The Northern Ireland-based research and development firm, which also has US offices, will create up to 229 new jobs over the next three years as part of two new projects.

The first is the recent completion of a new drug development facility in Craigavon, Northern Ireland, and the other is the expansion of its commercial manufacturing facilities, representing a total investment of £13.7m. This includes support from Invest Northern Ireland.

High volume bulk commercial manufacturing should begin in November 2013.

Almac says that it sees potential to grow its customer base into various overseas markets including China.

The firm employs over 2,000 staff through their UK operations, and last year announced a recruitment deal with CK Group.

EMC
The company, which has had operations in Cork in the Republic of Ireland for 25 years, will add 200 “highly skilled jobs” to its workforce as part of a €100m (£85m) investment.

The new full-time roles spanning customer support, engineering, finance, IT, research & development and sales, will come in a new facility in Mahon, County Cork, opening in August.

EMC president and chief operating officer David Goulden says the firm’s investment in Ireland “is key to our global growth strategy which is focused on three of the most important drivers in IT for enterprise customers - cloud, Big Data and trusted IT”.

The firm currently has 3,000 people in Ireland, and expects to fill its new roles by the end of 2013. Investment agency IDA Ireland has supported the expansion.

EMC were winners in the best employee referral category at last month’s 2013 Recruiter Awards for Excellence, sponsored by Eploy.
