Two more large UK employers, professional services firm PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) and banking group Barclays, say they will increase their apprenticeship recruitment this year, in announcements made as we reach the midway point in National Apprenticeship Week.

Barclays
The firm says it will double the number of apprentices joining the company this year to 2,000.

Barclays has also pledged support to a scheme giving businesses across the UK a free support package to help them fund, employ and train an apprentice, the Barclays Bridge Into Work programme.

PwC
In total the firm will recruit 109 Higher Apprentices this year, an almost 10% increase on last year, with management consulting vacancies trebling from six to almost 20.

Gaenor Bagley, PwC’s head of people, says: “After the success of last year’s recruitment, this year all our school leaver roles will be Higher Apprenticeships at the firm.

“The Higher Apprenticeship is a realistic option and it’s opening up professional services to a much wider market than ever before.”

For the first time, PwC will recruit six Higher Apprenticeships for its business recovery services team. In February, PwC received over 250 applications for the first 60 vacancies in the firm’s tax division.
