Companies in the UK and Ireland, including Aeromet, BMW, Caterpillar, eBay and Virgin Media have announced a number of job opportunities.

Aeromet

Aerospace industry supplier Aeromet is expected to create up to 38 jobs after it was awarded just over £1m from the government’s Regional Growth Fund.

The company, which has sites in Rochester and Sittingbourne in Kent and Worcester in Worcestershire, will use the funding for a research & development project to exploit new technologies for its patented aluminium alloy A20X.

BMW

BMW plans to take on more than 150 apprentices this year.

The new recruits will join nearly 400 existing apprentices currently undergoing training across the company’s UK operations, and within its BMW and Mini dealer network.

The business is looking for 45 new apprentices to take up places at its Mini UK production plants in August as they prepare for the next model generation. In addition, BMW and Mini dealerships are looking to recruit around 100 young people across the UK.

Skills minister Matthew Hancock says: “It is great news that BMW are offering so many more exciting apprenticeships. Apprenticeships are the best way for young people to get the skills both they and their employer needs, while earning a salary, and this scheme demonstrates really well the opportunities that are out there.”

Caterpillar

Industrial and construction equipment manufacturer Caterpillar is to create 200 shared services jobs in West Belfast.

The investment is being supported by Invest Northern Ireland, which is providing Caterpillar with £1.28m to support the expansion plan.

Robert Kennedy, Caterpillar Northern Ireland operations director, says: “With the support from Invest NI and the government departments, as well as the availability of key, essential skills in the professional shared services area, we are pleased to announce Northern Ireland as the location of choice for this expansion of services.”

The Department for Employment and Learning (DEL) has also offered training support of £440,000 under its Assured Skills programme.

eBay

EBay Inc, the company behind the online marketplace, plans to create 450 jobs at its existing facility in Dundalk in the Republic of Ireland.

EBay says the new jobs will help provide the growing European customer base of the company’s eBay marketplaces and PayPal businesses with an "enhanced experience" in the areas of customer services, sales and compliance.

Louise Phelan, vice president global operations EMEA at PayPal, says: “We currently have over 230 people employed on site there [in Dundalk] and we look forward to continuing to expand this number in 2013.”

Virgin Media

Internet and telecommunications provider Virgin Media is creating 400 jobs across the UK.

The company plans to take on 230 employees at Swansea, 90 new engineering and 40 customer care roles in Manchester, and 40 customer care jobs in Birmingham.

Last year, Virgin Media created 620 jobs at a new centre of excellence in Swansea.
