Thu, 28 Feb 2013The Indian government has cancelled the licences of 91 recruitment agents over the past three years, according to The Economic Times.

The agents were found to be engaged in illegal activities while sending people abroad for employment, the India Times website states.

“We have cancelled licences of 29 agents in 2010, 44 in 2011 and 18 in 2012,” the minister for Overseas Indian Affairs (MOIA) Vayalar Ravi told the Lok Sabha (the lower house of the Parliament of India) during Question Hour.

The cancellations follow complaints received by the ministry around the employment of women seeking work overseas as maids. The agents then failed to make any “change in their conduct”, according to the minister.

Ravi said the matters were referred to the respective state governments to prosecute the failed agents.
