Pet retailer PetSmart is to hire for an estimated 500 new jobs at a distribution centre in Bethel, Pennsylvania due to become operational by April 2014.

The full 500 jobs would be in place by the end of 2016, although over half should be added by the end of 2014 itself. There will also be the boost of an unspecified number of construction phase jobs when the project starts this autumn.

The company will be vacating two smaller distribution centres in Maryland and Ohio when the centre is finished, with the approximately 160 workers affected by these closures due to be offered roles with PetSmart elsewhere.

Pennsylvania governor Tom Corbett says: “When I was elected governor, I made a commitment to bring the Pennsylvania economy back and grow private-sector jobs. Bringing projects to the commonwealth like PetSmart’s distribution centre is adding jobs and having a positive economic impact on local communities.”
