Iran’s first factory specialising in the production of locomotives has been opened in the city of Karaj, where it will employ 300 people immediately and 750 when the second phase of the project begins.
It is also expected that jobs for around 3,000 people will be created in various parts of the supply chain and related services.
The Iranian government is aiming to take an 18% share of the rail market through the new plant, which will be capable of producing 120 locomotives annually.
Iran’s unemployment rate in 2011 was 15.3%, up from 14.6% in 2010.
