Modest Brits undersell themselves, says Gumtree research

Fri, 22 Jun 2012
UK jobseekers are too reserved to effectively sell themselves while job hunting, shows research from jobs board Gumtree.com.

It found that 92% of UK jobseekers aren’t confident about talking about themselves in an interview, with 27% saying they sell themselves ‘very poorly’ because they find it hard to talk about their skills abilities.
Employers claim that nearly half (42%) of job candidates regularly undersell themselves, and 28% downplay their skills and capabilities in interviews.

It also listed the industries where jobseekers are most likely to undersell themselves in an interview:

  • Public sector (53% of workers say they undersell themselves)
  • Media (52%)
  • Health worker (51%)
  • Retail (46%)
  • Education (45%)

As a career coach, I talk to people about this all the time, and the one big thing they could improve on is rehearsing potential answers to interview questions, but rehearse them ALOUD. Hearing your own voice is what throws people at interviews quite often, so practice practice practice!
