INTERNATIONAL Blog from Beijing: Day 2 of APSCo in China

Ann Swain, chief executive of the Association of Professional Staffing Companies (APSCo), blogs for Recruiter from the organisation’s Trade Delegation to China.

No time for sightseeing today. Sungbo Shim and Laura Wang of our sponsors, Squire Sanders, did a brilliant job of taking us through Chinese Employment Law and allayed any fears that we might have had about employing a team of consultants.

The inimitable Tony Goodwin of Antal International introduced us to Zhao Naizhen who runs the China Association of Foreign Service Trades, which looks after the interests of the recruitment sector across China, and Wallace Gao, chairman of Career International, one of the leading RPO (recruitment process outsourcing) providers in China. The conversation was enlightening.

Sarah Jones, head of operations for Asia at Antal covered the life of an expat in Beijing - busy, complicated but worth it, and Fiona Lander of Lander Associates, gave insights in how to engage a multi-cultural and multi-generational team.

Then a short but hair-raising cab ride across town delivered us to the China-British Business Council to investigate their ‘launch pad’ service for British businesses (frankly a no-brainer for a start up). Phew! We're flying to Shanghai tomorrow morning with a full afternoon schedule to follow.
