INTERNATIONAL Australia: More working than ever before

Fri, 8 Jun 2012
There were a record 11.54m Australians in work in May, an increase of 40,000 on the previous month, according to Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) data.

This includes 8.1m people in full-time employment, with this figure increasing by 46,000 on the month, while those in part-time work fell slightly.
Australia’s unemployment rate stands at 5.1%.

Minister for employment and workplace relations Bill Shorten says: “Australia’s strong jobs record and our low unemployment rate reaffirm the strength and resilience of the Australian people and our economy.

“Australia’s strong economic fundamentals stand in stark contrast to many advanced economies which are struggling to grow at all, and face crippling unemployment levels.”
