Clinton Cards outlets sale to US firm a boost for retail

Fri, 8 Jun 2012
Retail recruiters tell Recruiter that the sale of many outlets of gift and card retailer Clinton Cards to a US firm provides a much-needed boost to the high street.

Kate McCarthy, founder of retail recruiter McCarthy Retail, tells Recruiter that the announcement is “fantastic news for the retail industry”.
She adds that in her opinion the firm “could be improved” and adopt a “more modern offering”.

As a US firm, it “might bring something new to the high street”, she adds, saying that any new owner will always provide a “breath of fresh air”.

James Massey, a retail and fashion talent finder at multi-sector Clever Recruit, tells Recruiter that the nationality of the buyer is “irrelevant”.

“The retail industry is in no position to have any patriotic tendencies. Saving jobs and offering customers the service and products they need is priority.”

He also notes that “It is growing increasingly common that the demise of a retailer is significantly affected by rental costs and unit overheads.”

As reported by recruiter.co.uk last week, the Confederation of British Industry’s (CBI’s) ‘Distributive Trades Survey’ for May saw a positive balance of recruitment intentions within the retail industry for the first time since 2004.
