Next-gen Vauxhall model creates 700 jobs

Thu, 17 May 2012

Auto maker Vauxhall will create 700 new direct jobs in the production of its new next-generation Astra compact car at its Ellesmere Port, Cheshire facility.

Production will start in 2015 on a three-shift model, with a minimum of 160,000 vehicles to be produced per year.

The car will be produced at least “into the early 2020s”, the firm says.

Vauxhall chairman and managing director Duncan Aldred says: “With Ellesmere Port’s proven build quality and a new agreement that ensures excellent cost competitiveness, this facility will provide additional employment and, as the lead plant for the next-generation Astra, will be one of the cornerstones of our European manufacturing footprint.”

As previously reported by recruiter.co.uk, every job in car production creates about 7.5 in the supply chain, according to the Automotive Council.
