INTERNATIONAL Europe: Salary a must on job ads for IT

Thu, 19 Apr 2012
Nine out of 10 IT workers want to know what they will earn before applying for a new jobs, but only a quarter of posted job profiles display salary.

This is according to research including a survey of nearly 800 IT professionals carried out by Dutch IT recruiter RAVE-cruitment.
It also identifies ‘communicative’ as an increasingly common word in job postings – it is written in 31% of the adverts posted.

RAVE-cruitment’s founder Rob van Elburg says: “Our research shows that the salary indication has to be specified. IT people like simplicity and clarity a lot! Their work is difficult enough already.”

A job advert without a salary, is like a bike without a saddle - useless. What response would you expect to a job advert with a vague description, unspecific location, anonymous employer and £competitive salary quoted? How many people aspire to that difficult to find perfect job with a "competitive salary"?

Recruiters and employers are frankly usually too cowardly to quote a salary, for fear of scaring off applicants with a figure that is too low, or intimidate them with a salary which is too high. They also dread being held to the advertised figure, if they quote an over-generous wage in the advert - "But the advert said the job paid £120k, and you're offering me £25k!"

This is the illogical reasoning of idiots. State the salary band, describe the role accurately, sell the company by naming them, and take responsibility for the response!
