Burnett told Recruiter that he believes nearly all recruiting processes are designed to accomplish what the organisation needs to get done from an administrative perspective, often in the most cost-efficient manner. “While many organisations talk about hiring the best talent, the most commonly used metric — and in many cases the only metric — used to manage the function is cost-per-hire,” he said. “The end result is a process that completely overlooks influencing top talent that isn’t desperate for a new opportunity as an objective. Unfortunately most of the tools that support the recruiting function continue to focus on easing administration and not empowering talent functions with radical new approaches to engaging talent.”HOLISTIC STRATEGIES

Recruiter caught up with Burnett shortly after it was announced that he would be joining the UK-based career social network BraveNewTalent. He joins as director of strategy and is the first hire in the organisation’s Silicon Valley office. Previously, he spent 10 years as managing director of John Sullivan Associates in the US working on global talent strategies with major international companies. He said BraveNewTalent will be focusing on strategies that will enable next generation practices that are “holistic in nature” while being cognisant that organisational practices “rarely change overnight”. While he will have a US operations role, he will also be involved in UK strategies: “Widespread growth of the internet is very quickly creating a global talent market, so to look at crafting BraveNewTalent’s company and go-to-market strategy from a single country would fail to put the talent first, which is a day-to-day directive for BraveNewTalent.”

Burnett believes the recruitment industry is starting to show more maturity in its use of social media but said the tools available for recruiters needed to catch up. “We will see a great deal of maturity emerge in the use of enterprise class marketing tools by early adopting organisations and in new tools that better reflect the leading edge of knowledge on social recruiting.”
