WHO’S HIRING
Supermarket chain Asda is to create 7,000 new jobs. Asda plans to open nine new stores, while its online division will hire 2,000 new staff.

Satellite broadcaster BSkyB has announced that it will create 1,000 jobs as it prepares for the roll-out of its high-definition television
service.

Restaurant chain McDonald’s is to recruit 4,000 workers and open 20 new restaurants in the UK.

WHO’S FIRING
Steelmaker Corus is cutting 2,500 jobs in the UK. The steelmaker is restructuring its engineering steel business, with 700 jobs lost in
Rotherham alone.

Children’s wear chain Adams has announced it is to cut 267 jobs.

Following losses of $1.9bn in its fourth quarter trading, electronics retailer Philips announced plans to cut 6,000 jobs from its workforce worldwide.

Construction firm Caterpillar will cut 20,000 jobs worldwide. The firm currently employs 10,000 people in the UK.

Pharmaceutical company Pfizer is to slash 19,000 jobs globally. The move follows its takeover of Wyeth.

Financial group ING is making 7,000 staff redundant worldwide to save $1.3bn (£930m) this year.

Vehicle manufacturer General Motors has cut 2,000 jobs in the US. The jobs will be cut at plants in Michigan and Ohio.
