The revelation that recruiters don’t feel able to supply temporary staff to the London Borough of Waltham Forest because they fear that their candidates won’t pass the borough’s screening process is a shocking indictment of standards in some section of the industry.
While some recruiters may prefer to bury their heads in the sand, the issue of standards is not going to go away. If anything, with unemployment set to climb, the pressures on candidates to be economical with the truth, or exaggerate their achievements, can only increase. Similarly, pressure on margins may push some recruiters into cutting corners.
However, with the GLA possibly extending its remit into new sectors, and awareness of fraud inevitable set to rise from initiatives such as PREFIT, raising the standards in the industry has never been more important.
That’s why it is time for recruiters, not only to attend forum’s such as PREFIT’s sister forum for the recruitment industry SAFER, but to make a
contribution too.

DeeDee has struck a cord which should worry organisations who routinely take staff – both temp and perm – from recruitment agencies. If candidates have not been screened to the point where they can start work then the agencies are simply not doing their job.
Organisations looking for staff are going to be getting higher and higher levels of response in the near and medium future, if agencies cannot screen effectively they should not be in the business of supplying staff.
Recruiters would be better off investing the money they are wasting on agencies in a simple to use, cost effective and robust talent management solution which will not only automate large elements of the screening process, but will also offer candidates a quality online experience and position the recruiting organisations as an employer of choice because candidates will get immediate feedback on the status of their application.
This saves recruiters time as there is less administration, which to be honest is what bad agencies are doing, but they are charging a lot of money for this services.
